01 What is the Au Pair program?
Au pair program is an international cultural exchange that gives a possibility for young people to spend
some time abroad, learn more about a different culture, improve the foreign language in exchange for help
with duties related to childcare. The term “au pair” from French means “on equal terms”, signifying that
Au Pair and Host Family treat each other as equals. While the Au Pair can live abroad in an economical way,
the Host Family gets the benefit of flexible, affordable live-in child care.
02 What are the requirements for being an Au Pair?
The Au Pair program has the specific age requirements for participants.
This age limit is between 18 and 29 years old. If you have not attained full age by the time you want
to go abroad your parents have to sign the Au Pair contract for you. You have a good command of English.
You like to spend time with children. You need to have at least a school diploma as educational
qualification. You need to have a good health and with non-criminal record. Also, you are keen to live
in China for some time.
03 Who is an Au Pair ?
An Au Pair is a young person (female or male) between 18 and 29 years old who stays with a local Host
Family, learns their language and culture in exchange for helping with childcare responsibilities such as
tutoring English, playing games together, or doing sports. An Au Pair gets accommodation, regular meals
and pocket money for personal expenses.
04 What is a Host Family?
A Host Family is a family willing to host an Au Pair under the host country’s official program.
Host Families must meet certain requirements in order to join the program. For instance, they must
have a child under 18 years old, ability to host an Au Pair in their home and respect Host Family
responsibilities during the program.
05 How does the Au Pair program work?

06 How long can an Au Pair stay last?
The duration of the stay depends on Au Pair, Host Family and host country’s program regulations.
Some countries have set a minimum and a maximum time for an Au Pair stay, which usually varies from
3 up to 6 or 12 months.
07 What are the duties of an Au Pair?
The Au Pair’s main responsibilities are taking care of the Host Family’s children,
assisting with children’s homework, English study and playing games with children, etc.
08 What are the working hours of an Au Pair?
Au Pairs should work maximum 25 hours per week.
Both Au Pair and Host Family should agree on a schedule and the way those hours will be split.
09 Are Au Pairs entitled to free time and holidays?
Au Pairs are usually entitled to 1.5 free days per week and a whole weekend off per month.
Au Pair will have 3 paid holiday days off every three months.
10 Who should pay for the travel expenses?
During the program, if the Chinese Host Families are willing to take Au Pair to go travelling,
then the Chinese Host Families will be in charge of all expenses for Au Pair. If Au Pair would
like to go travelling by herself or himself during her/his paid holidays, they will be in charge
of their own expenses by themselves.
11 Who should apply and pay for the visa expenses?
The visa expenses must be paid by the Au Pair themselves.
12 Do Au Pairs have to visit a language course?
Au Pairs usually attend language course in the host country which is provided by Tutor Plus in
order to improve their language skills and meet new people and develop their language study.
Au Pairs need to discuss the working schedule with their Host Families so they have the time to join
a language course.
13 How to avoid homesickness when you are abroad?
Being an Au Pair gives you the opportunity to live abroad and expand your horizon.
Nevertheless, this chance also comes with some challenges. Being far away from your family and friends,
difficulty with understanding the language and having to adapt to a new culture can of course lead to
some nostalgic feelings. For this reason, we have put together some recommendations to help you avoid
